Microsoft-owned OpenAI has unveiled new ChatGPT features and announced a spring update to chat, introducing the GPT-4o model. Let's take a look at what new features have been introduced and what impact they will have on the market.

New developments in GPT-4o

Innovations include real-time speech processing, the ability to interrupt the chatbot's responses and changing the voice timbre to a less mechanical one. It is also planned to allow the chatbot to be used without logging in, although the implementation date is not yet known.

The company stressed that GPT-4 will be available to all users, including those using the free version, and ChatGPT Plus subscribers will receive higher capacity limits. The Gemini programme is designed to make it easier to solve maths tasks from pictures and natural voice conversations.

Is this the end of language learning?

The public was particularly interested in real-time speech processing, making it possible, for example, to translate text seamlessly into another language, as well as to read the speaker's emotions. This caused the shares of language learning platform Duolingo to fall by 26 per cent in just four sessions.

OpenAI has also announced a partnership with Apple. ChatGPT is expected to be part of Apple's AI offering in iOS 18, although its role in everyday iPhone use is still unclear. Apple is also developing its own AI projects, which may take priority over integration with ChatGPT. Details will be announced at WWDC on 10 June. Despite these announcements, we are not seeing significant increases in the tech giant's share price.

This industry stands to gain the most from the development of AI

It seems that GPT-4o will further enhance the operation of areas such as real-time programming, education through new learning features with AI, telemedicine and customer service. The question arises as to which company will be the first to implement the new functionalities. However, at the moment, the biggest beneficiaries in terms of business are not the companies offering AI solutions, but the manufacturers of semiconductors and graphics cards, which are required to handle the massive computing power needed for artificial intelligence. Hence, we see increasing revenues from companies such as Nvidia, whose sales increased by 265 per cent, and Taiwanese giant TSMC with a year-on-year increase of 60 per cent. The iShares Semiconductor ETF, which includes shares of semiconductor companies, has gained 107 per cent over the past 12 months, and seems likely to be the biggest beneficiary of the AI boom.
